Fantastic read! I always think about cookbooks that stand the test of time, like Claudia Roden or Julia Child. I see so many recent cookbook releases, with trending recipes, digital drawings and fashionable colours and fonts, knowing full well that in a year they will seem outdated. Originally and a creative authority seems to be the last thing that the industry is interested in.
Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts! And agree with what you said here, especially because it makes me think about the value (if anything?) of when a recipe goes viral.
Yes!!!!!!!!! I’m working on my first zine with my partner. Can’t wait to share it with our community here in Austin. We are probably also going to do a digital version.
Thank you for writing this piece! I have been thinking a lot about zines and their role in the food writing and cookbook writing space the past couple of years. So happy to see so many new examples.
Thank you for reading, Olga!! I’m happy to become acquainted with your work as well, zines or otherwise (although I just realized I was already following you on TikTok🤣)
Love this post! Have published 2 zines and working on my 3rd...I have found the process liberating and a way to combine my love of food, photography and storytelling. More zines please 🌟 !!!
I am absolutely floored that zines are still around. The world hasn't gone to sh*t after all. I left the US 18 years ago, and I honestly haven't seen them anywhere else, and I thought they were pretty much done when I left. I am honestly completely giddy right now. Can't wait to explore this some more. 🌸🌸
Yes!!! People often say I should write a cookbook and I've always said no I can't see it, but maybe a zine. Love everything about this post. Coming from an arts background (specifically zines/mail art/printmaking) I've always thought one day I would re-connect the two practices - cake-making being something I accidentally fell into. MORE ZINES x
Great read Teresa. With the digital age of copy, some may wonder why print but the "Hold Dear in your hand" is sooooo spot on. I created a zine this year that has been my food baby for a while. I did think that the DIY nature would make this a seamless process but had to teach myself the adobe platform and wow. not a good technicall galll more of a hands on one.
LOVE this! Thank you. As a decades long zine collector AND community cookbook collector, they both provoke similar feelings in me when I hold them and read them. I love that I'm not being marketed to or shouted at by advertisers or influencers. I love thinking about who made this labor of love and WHY they created it. I love honoring the creator(s) by appreciating their work and enthusiastically sharing it with friends and loved ones. Zines bring joy to my life and I sincerely hope any zine makers who read this comment understand how much JOY they bring to me and many, many others. :)
THANK YOU for all of your research, and for writing about this is in such an open and thoughtful way full of heart. Feeling extremely encouraged right now!
You're so clear, Teresa, it must be painful sometimes! I really enjoyed this essay and love reading about zines (clearly), and am having thoughts too... needing to re-look at how I'm approaching writing / social media. Thanks for the shoutout :)
AHH thank you for the Eate Collective essay link — so much good food for thought!! and for the poignant reminder of zines as love of/rage against. thank you for wanting to talk about Shelf Life, my wonderful friend — i deeply need to read all of these other zines now (and so happy to see Melanie/other friends!!!) sending you all empowerment and support/enabling (lol) in harvesting fresh future fruit <3 always here for you
love all of this (almost quoted the whole thing on Instagram). and it's totally true, in the same way that chefs are always chasing what a home cook has, fancy cookbooks are always chasing what a community cookbooks has. i can't wait to hold your zine!

That’s so cool! I love how zines can be whatever you want and so the making of them really is liberating.

I think you forgot one, Teresa ;)
Noooo I was always going to forget one😣 I’m sorry!
it's okay! I just wanted to be sure you realized your collection was at least one zine greater
One zine richer! I think I overlooked it because yours is not on my book shelf, I keep it in my bakery space. But I still feel horrible!!!😭
you need a second one for your desk, like me
