My partner owns a small business and is always fielding unsolicited advice from a family member who works for NASDAQ and tries to convince him to SCALE UP and all this other bs he doesn't want to do because he is trying to have a life. Blah blah blah. Go start your own business, then see how hard it is and how much work it is before you go running your mouth about stuff you have no idea about, Mr. NASdick lol.
Trying to work outside capitalist systems is difficult by design, but when we commit and allow ourselves to get creative with the ways we resist, we can create some beautiful, more equitable systems. I love that you refused to take a little bit of money from a largely unethical company and that you instead pour your energy into finding ways to support your community directly. Those other companies will eat themselves alive because all they do is consume and when everything is barren around them, they will have nothing but themselves to feed their bottomless pit.
Congratulations on the wedding and on what was hopefully a bit of a break, not just from newsletter writing. And well done you for deciding how you want to run your business and not bending to other people's expectations.
I had coffee with a friend of mine the other day, the owner of 2 cookie stores and who was pondering her next move - whether to start selling her cookies to supermarkets, open another shop, turn her shops into a franchise brand, expand her line-up of baked goods etc. And so I asked her what she actually enjoyed the most and whether it was worth it to expand the business for the sake of expanding or whether that would maybe take time away from what she enjoyed the most - the recipe-testing and building her brand. And it gave her a fresh perspective because there is always so much pressure to just grow for the sake of growing.
💗Thanks, Sophia! I love this. Every small biz owner has to make these decisions for themselves, I’m glad you were able to offer your friend a different perspective.
Oh I’m so sorry about the jerks on Twitter. I was just on for personal reasons so as a gift to myself for my 50th birthday, I deleted my account. I can’t wait to see your zine!
It’s been difficult for me to leave Twitter completely! I take breaks but usually go back😓, I’m not proud lol. Thank you as always though Christine and hope you had a good birthday!💗
I’ll order your zine! My grandpa had a panaderia in the back of his little Mexican grocery store in California. I spent many hours there, sweeping, packing groceries, restocking the soda cooler and organizing the return soda bottles into their crates for the bottle distributor. Fresh from the oven concha’s are the best!
Your business. Your decisions on how to run it. I'm glad to read you're running it the way YOU want to :).
And I cannot wait to order copies of your zine when the preorder link goes live. It's beautiful!!
Thank you, Steph! That means a lot to me.

Ugh that’s so frustrating! A lack of imagination about what a business is and can be plagues capitalists, which I find really sad tbh.
So excited for my copy!
Thank you for ordering!!!!💗💗 can’t wait for you to see it.
